Articulate: Primary

Until Thursday 22 September

What is Articulate: Primary

Articulate: Primary uses learning strategies developed from a pilot project delivered in 2018/19. The programme supports development of oracy, communication and literacy skills using a variety of visual literacy and philosophical enquiry techniques devised to encourage conversation, debate, vocabulary building and collaborative working.

This programme comes at a time when the impact of 'Cultural Capital' and the provision of the Arts in schools is more prominent. Through Articulate: Primary we hope to support schools in providing arts opportunities for their pupils in a way that is practical, accessible and cross-curricular.

The progamme includes:

  • A teacher training session for all staff signed up to the programme, on using the visual literacy techniques, and the Laing's collections to develop oracy skills in the classroom
  • Five visual literacy sessions working with the teacher and pupils to explore artworks as a catalyst for discussion and debate, at the Laing or in-school, for a class of KS1 or KS2 pupils
  • Support in developing extension work resulting from the facilitated sessions
  • A discounted price* for additional classes booked for the Articulate: Primary Programme.

Teachers that took part in the Articulate: Primary pilot in 2018/19 said:

“I have seen a definite improvement in the children’s confidence to talk about new or unfamiliar concepts. They have become more ambitious in their use of language during their individual writing and seem to be more motivated towards the subject [Literacy]” - Year 3 Teacher

"The nature of art allows for development of individual opinions and thoughts to take place, giving the children more ownership over their thoughts and outcomes. I would highly recommend the program as it is a valuable and engaging experience for children. In a generation of technology and video games it provides children the opportunity to explore new things and learn about different ways to express themselves.” - Year 3 Teacher

"I have learnt children should be given the time to share their views on different artwork. This time can allow for the development of; thinking, communication and over all literacy skills at a much deeper and complex level." - Year 3 Teacher
