AHRC-funded PhD (3.5-4 years), Northern Bridge Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership
Histories, Collections and Practice: Gender and the Regional Art Gallery
We invite applications for a fully-funded PhD project based at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
This topical project explores gender representation in the collecting, curatorial and educational practices of UK art galleries from the early twentieth century to today. Using Newcastle’s Laing Art Gallery (founded 1906) as a central case study, it adopts a new-museological approach to uncover the gendered power relations inscribed in the gallery’s archive, which continue to influence practice today. The project will propose new impactful models for the museum sector, and nuance our understanding of the role of regional galleries in promoting public knowledge of the relationship between art and gender.
The PhD project would be ideally suited to applicants wanting to develop careers in the museum and heritage sector (especially in curatorial and learning departments), or for those wishing to gain impactful experience in working with partners for use in the academic sector. The student will be based on site in the curatorial offices of the Laing Art Gallery (5 minutes walk from Northumbria campus) and work closely with their archives, library and collections. The project will involve a number of placements (for up to six months) enabling the student to develop and apply their research in other national and regional galleries.
